An Australian biking across the county to raise awareness of youth homelessness in America made a brief pit stop Wednesday in Olney to promote his cause, meet the mayor and talk about why he still believes in the humanity. Alex Petrou, who had never ridden a bicycle prior to coming to America, started his journey Sept. 18 in Los Angeles and wants to arrive in Washington, D.C., by Nov. 10 before ending his trip in New York.

Six to eight hours on a bicycle travelling up to 150km a day with just a 20-30kg pack on his back, is how Alex Petrou intends to spend the next two months. The former Cairns resident, who moved to Brisbane in June for work commitments, starts his 7400km journey across the USA today. He hopes to complete the marathon trek from Los Angeles to New York City in just 52 days and along the way raise awareness and money to tackle youth homelessness. Read more…

Rain, hail or shine, Cairns’ Alex Petrou is braving the elements and walking from Brisbane to his home town to raise money for charities. He began his journey on November 25 and hopes to reach his goal destination by Christmas Day. “I hope to raise $12,500 for Camp Quality to help fund for a survivor camp (and) I want to raise $27,500 for Sunrise Children’s Village to teach the kids English,” he said.
